New book explores the contentious issues around assisted dying

Caralise Trayes being interviewed by Francesca Rudkin on Newstalk ZB on The Sunday Session about her book, The Final Choice. End of Life Suffering: Is Assisted Dying the Answer?

The more I hear about assisted dying and The End of Life Choice Act, the more uncertain I’ve become as to how I’ll vote in September, but thankfully journalist Caralise Trayes has delved into it, having spent the last few months researching and interviewing a wide range of experts on all aspects of the EOLC, as well as documenting personal accounts from those who it may affect.

Francesca Rudkin is serious about her journalism. My first radio interview couldn’t have been hosted by a better person.

Her producer was quick to answer my call after I’d parked in Mike Hosking’s car park for the Sunday morning interview at NZME. And upon approaching her desk among the myriad of others in the open plan room, straight away Francesca launched into her review of my book. She showed me her notes that had diligently been taken - including a list of pros and cons about the End of Life Choice Act and assisted dying she made while reading through.

Within minutes we were in the studio, next door was Newstalk’s The Resident Builder Peter Wolfkamp - better known as ‘Wolfie’ from The Block NZ.

Francesca was appreciative of the work that had gone into interviewing and researching for the book - she said it had resulted in a readable and user-friendly resource for others to get informed with.
